"what's your highlight?"

October 23, 2023

As most of you know, I am currently spending some time in Australia visiting my sister and her family, who have lived here for the past 12 years.

(Last week, I published a post with my background story. There, you can have some more context on our travelling roots. Check it out here)

In the evenings, we often sit at the table together to enjoy dinner, and that's usually when my 4-year-old nephew looks you in the eye with his blue rounded eyes and pops the question full of curiosity: "What's your highlight?" (with a very Australian accent).

At first, I was somewhat confused, not fully comprehending what he meant. After the first explanation, it made complete sense: what was the day's highlight? If we were to choose one favourite moment, what would it be?

I love it.

What a beautiful way to end the day, looking back at everything that happened and choosing one particular moment that sparked your day. Even on the most challenging day, at least one tiny moment always made it better.

Everyone at the table ends up answering the question and, with that, also sharing a part of their day or a new perspective on a day spent together.

Sometimes, when I ask my nephew what his highlight was, he answers "the whole day" with a big smile and a little laugh.

I asked my sister when/where that custom was initiated, but she does not remember; it is a tradition they have had for several years.

What I do know is that this is a habit that I will take with me from now on. A little moment to reflect at the end of the day: which sparkle did it bring?

And with that, I ask you: What was YOUR highlight today?
